I want to take this time to share some exciting news with you all. I’ve attained a big girl job!
For the past two years, I’ve been interning and freelancing (aka making little to no money) to gain real world experience within the journalism industry. You would think after my internships I’d get hired. But nope, my luck has been shit. And it’s not because I’m not good at what I do, it’s because the Canadian job market sucks. Unless you’re willing to move to a small town somewhere in the prairies, you’re fresh out of luck. With that being said, I could’ve moved out there to work for a community newspaper, but all those jobs require a vehicle and I (still) don’t know how to drive. I’m going to learn this summer, I promise!
Despite the rejection, I didn’t give up. I kept writing and blogging about things I’m most passionate about and now, my hard work has finally paid off. I am the junior web editor at House & Home Magazine. I started earlier this week and was thrown into the world of design and decor. I’m not an expert on the subject, but I needed a new challenge–and this couldn’t have been more perfect. I’ve always been interested in interior decorating; heck, I even wanted to pursue it as a career once upon a time. And here we are.
My first week has been incredible. The people I work with are really kind and helpful, and I get my own office! This is really exciting because all I’ve ever had is a cubicle, which I appreciated by the way. I’m just happy about the upgrade!
My job is primarily content and social media focused. I’ll be writing for the website and helping manage the editorial calendar. This is great because I want to be editor-in-chief of a fashion or lifestyle magazine someday, so this will definitely set me up for that.
There are a lot changes happening to the current website which I’m really excited about. Can’t share all the details just yet, but I’ll keep you all posted. If you’re not familiar with House & Home, do check out the website at your leisure. It’s pretty cool; lots of interesting content if you’re into DIYs, home upgrades and design.
I will continue to blog here, although it won’t be as often as before. I’m still getting into the swing of things at work, but keep checking back!
